The Angel Ball Gala

1992 – The first Angel Ball Gala was held on October 24 at the Royal York to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of St. Michael's Hospital. A special feature was participants in costumes of 1892. And on an equally historic note, it was the night the Blue Jays won the World Series.

1995 – With over 1,000 guests attending, the Angel Ball Gala moved to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for “A Truly Magical Evening” with MC hockey great Frank Mahovlich. Entertainment featured singer John McDermott. The evening raised over $550,000 for trauma research.

1998 – On November 7, the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto was the site of the 1998 Angel Ball Gala, which raised $685,000 for St. Michael’s Hospital’s Women’s Health Program. Eli Lilly was the lead sponsor of the event, along with numerous “angels” who stepped forward.

2002 – The Angel Ball Gala went Latin on April 27 as St. Michael’s was the beneficiary of the Brazilian Carnival Ball. Feathers, sequins, salsa music and a conga line all helped to raise $1.5 million to endow the Brazilian Ball Chair in Cardiac Research.

2005 – Fun and philanthropy met on the dance floor on October 22 as more than 1,200 guests raised a $1.5 million to support diabetes care and research at St. Michael’s. The spectacular evening was capped when the late George Mara and his daughter Diane announced a new $1 million gift matched by Roy Foss, another long-time friend of the Hospital, bringing the total raised during the evening to $3.5 million. MC Sean Cullen presided with popular crooner Matt Dusk the featured entertainer.
